Feasibility study about a "Digital Mediathek"
The Vorarlberg State Library has a media archive with a significant number of magnetic tapes (approx. 8.000 h audio and 8.000 h video) documenting life in the region of Vorarlberg over the last 25 years. Programmes from public and private broadcasters are stored, catalogued and made available to researchers and to other users of the library. To preserve this endangered treasure in a sustainable way a digital media archive is foreseen.
Based on the quantity structure and a proposed format for the newly created digital media the feasibility study revealed ways how to set up a digital media archive (storage system, data acquisition, backup) exactly tailored to the needs and to the available resources of the library. The ways of integration with the cataloguing infrastructure existing at the library where shown as well. A central aspect of the study was the investigation on possible migration paths for the existing media and the feasibility of the overall concept in terms of financial resources.
