The International Symposium on "Nanotechnology and LEDs" is a platform for outstanding experts from art, science, technology, and industry from Europe and Asia to present their experiences and discuss new ideas and concepts with participants who are actively working in the field of nanotechnology and solid state lighting (light emitting diodes). We are sure that the ambience of the symposium location, the spa area Loipersdorf (Austria) will provide an excellent environment for a fruitful and highly interactivemeeting.This symposium is organized by JOANNEUM RESEARCH in cooperation with TRIDONIC.ATCO, NANONET-Styria, Kompetenzzentrum Licht and SFG- Steirische Wirtschaftsförderung.
Nanotechnology and LED technology are groundbreaking technological fields with both a solid basis in Austria and a great worldwide future potential.
Nanotechnology is internationally regarded as one of the key technologies of the 21st century with significant impact on science, industrial development and economics. The control of structural and functional properties at the nanometer scale will enable technological progress and will open up novel markets.
Nanotechnology already nowadays proves to be a rapidly evolving field w. r. t. both academic and industrial R & D with substantial funding from national and supra-national programs. Moreover, a significant number of products already has made its way to the market, and even more useful or even breakthrough developments are showing up at the horizon.
This symposium shall highlight several aspects of nanotechnology especially w. r. t. opto-electronics (materials, devices and novel methods and techniques) including nanomarketing with a special focus on “nano activities” in Styria, and shall provide a platform to present and discuss the scientific and economic potentials, possibilities and chances of nanotechnology for this region. One of the key issues of this seminar is to give a significant input from nanotechnology to LEDs, which is one of its most prominent applications, and vice versa.
In display and signaling applications LED solutions are already commonly known and proved for a couple of years. In light sources used for lighting and illumination LEDs have attracted significant attention and are already widely used in many technical lighting applications in recent years. The penetration depth and acceptance of LED solutions in the lighting market
is dynamically increasing. Besides the already widely known advantages of LEDs like robustness and variety of pure colors, this solid state light source is especially attractive due to its flatness and various small sizes opening a variety of possibilities for the design of the lighting fixture and for the architectural lighting. The continuous progress in R & D targeting
power efficiency increase, improved lifetime and better white light quality is a key factor for the success of this new lighting technology.
