CLINICIP - Closed Loop Insulin Infusion for Critically Ill Patients

The EU-project CLINICIP is a prime example of the sustainability of a funded project: 13 project partners from 8 nations developed a system for efficient and reliable glucose measurement and setting for patients in ICUs.

Abnormally high blood sugar levels can occur even in healthy people - e.g. as a result of the stress or trauma of an accident or a serious illness. This phenomenon resembles that experienced by diabetes mellitus patients, and, like diabetes, it is treated with insulin.

The CLINICIP project was dedicated to research in this field and was accepted as an Integrated Project in the e-Health sector of the Sixth EU Framework Programme and was funded with an amount of 7,5 million Euros. The project was coordinated by the Institute of Information Systems & Information Management. Further participants were the Institute of Medical Technologies and Health Management and the Institute of Chemical Process Development and Control.

After four years CLINICIP could be very successfully finalised in all respects. The developed system allows the reduce the mortality rate and to avoid intricacies during the treatment of patients in the ICU.

At the moment the prototype is tested and evaluated in clinical studies. The routine employment of the glucose controling system in the ICU can be expected end of 2009.

In connection with the CLINICIP project a spin off company was funded which is scientifical supported by the former project partners JOANNEUM RESEARCH (Dipl.-Ing. Hans Köhler), Medizinische Universität Graz (Dr. med. Thomas Pieber) and Technische Universität Graz (Dipl. Chem. Ingo Klimant).
