Wildlife monitoring
Cutting-edge telemetry and remote sensing methods allow the condition and usage of the habitat of endangered wildlife to be evaluated.
Abstract
The data provide an important basis for consequential measures in wildlife management.
JOANNEUM RESEARCH developed a mobile data acquisition system for the monitoring of two species (deer and lynx) within the framework of two ecological projects in Austria. The system consists of an extremely lightweight and energy saving module which is kept attached to the animal over a period of several months up to a year. The module sends GPS data, environmental data and camera images to an observation station on a daily basis. For data transmission either GSM or GPRS technology is used.
