Acoustic tunnel monitoring - AKUT-2

In this project the functionality and the excellent advantages of a system used for acoustic tunnel monitoring should be shown by means of a demonstration project. Thereby, the results of the earlier feasibility study AKUT-1 are used and form a very important basis for the future work in the present project.

Acoustic monitoring of tunnels is based on the principle of an automatic detection of sounds produced within a road tunnel. These sounds already appear at the time of the event, which makes an automatic detection useful to dramatically reduce the reaction time of the emergency crew.

The primary goal of the demonstration project is to choose a road tunnel, in which a fully functional system for acoustic monitoring should be installed.
Thereby, the requests and the needs of future customers (tunnel operators) have to be considered within the specification of the system. In ensuing working steps the hardware components and the sensors are chosen corresponding to the specifications. The central area of development is to implement the detection-algorithms on a real-time system. A long-time test over a period of several months should be followed after the installation of the demonstrator within a specified track section. Thereby, the functionality and the reliability of the whole system should be checked.

The aim of this project is to highlight the functionality and the advantages of acoustic tunnel monitoring as well as to increase the safety in road tunnels for national and international drivers.
