Best Poster Award at MMM2011
Award at the 17th International Multimedia Modeling Conference (MMM)
Werner Bailer, member of the Institute DIGITAL, has received the Best Poster Award at the MMM 2011 in Taipei for his paper “A Feature Sequence Kernel for Video Concept Classification“. Felix Lee from DIGITAL, who presented the paper at the conference, accepted the award on behalf of the author.
This paper deals with the automatic classification of video segments based on the concepts appearing in them, e.g. “airplane”, “people marching”, “office environment”. Kernel-based methods like support vector machines are often applied to such problems. However, in many cases only single frames from the video are used for classification. The awarded publication proposes a kernel that explicitly models the temporal sequence in the video. Video concept classification is also one of the tasks in the TRECVID video retrieval benchmark, in which DIGITAL has participated regularly in the previous years.
