WRONG WAY DRIVER!

“The National Transport Award shows how much creativity is being put into increasing levels of road safety,” said Transport Minister Doris Bures presenting the National Awards at the ceremony held in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier (the city’s art complex) on the evening of 17 March 2010.
The awards seek to recognise Austrian innovations which make a special contribution to increased road safety. The prize in the category “Conception and development of prototypes/system solutions” went to JOANNEUM RESEARCH.
The prize was awarded for the project “Wrong way driver monitoring – GeMon”, which aims to increase safety on Austria’s roads. The system uses the existing cameras mounted along the motorway network and automated video analysis to detect vehicles being driven in the wrong direction down the motorway. The video footage is analysed in real time and a warning issued within a maximum of one second. Traffic management authorities can then take immediate action to prevent accidents and possible loss of life. GeMon was developed at the Institute for Information Systems at JOANNEUM RESEARCH under the leadership of Werner Haas.
“I’d like to congratulate the research team, in particular Georg Thallinger, Harald Stiegler and Peter Schallauer,” said JOANNEUM RESEARCH Managing Director Edmund Müller at the awards ceremony. “It’s thanks to their commitment and expertise that JOANNEUM RESEARCH has been presented with this National Award. As an organisation focusing on applied research, we are of course used to our work leading to tangible results. But this particular project is of course a great example of how research can result in actual applications.”
