Project developers can decide to prepare an A/R CDM project activity
that is in compliance with modalities defined by the COP/MOP of the
UNFCCC. The project will be assessed against these modalities by a
Designated Operational Entity on the basis of a Project Design Document,
stakeholder consultation, a field visit and a Letter of Approval by
the Host Country. The Pre-feasibility and Feasibility Stage Modules
provide tools for preparing such A/R CDM project activities.
Forestry-based projects can also be assessed against international
standards such as for example defined by
FSC
and
CCBA.
These will ensure that the project will properly consider environmental
and social issues. If such independent assessments are not preferred,
there is still the possibility to self-assess the project against
a comprehensive set of objective criteria to ensure that the project
is sound in terms of protecting the environment and community rights.
Project developers can choose to develop an example project in terms
of social and environmental sustainability, which goes beyond the
A/R CDM requirements.
To this end the Encofor Plus mode in the various tools can be of assistance
and it can help to highlight the benefits of the project to people
and environment. It can also assist the project in attaining FSC,
CCBA or other standards.
