{"id":2402,"date":"2023-05-10T10:50:50","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T08:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.joanneum.at\/coremed\/?p=2402"},"modified":"2023-10-16T11:15:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T09:15:41","slug":"europaeische-kommission-erteilt-orphan-drug-status-fuer-evocellic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.joanneum.at\/coremed\/en\/europaeische-kommission-erteilt-orphan-drug-status-fuer-evocellic\/","title":{"rendered":"European Commission grants orphan drug status for EVOCellic"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Milestone in the treatment of severe burns<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>An orphan drug designation<\/strong>\u00a0(EU\/3\/22\/2637) relates to the use of human allogeneic keratinocytes for the\u00a0<strong>treatment of severe burns.<\/strong>These skin cells, specially preserved using a patented process, are the active component of the product\u00a0<strong>EVOCellic<\/strong>which is currently undergoing\u00a0<strong>preclinical development\u00a0<\/strong>by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zwt-graz.at\/mieter\/evomedis-gmbh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EVOMEDIS<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in collaboration with researchers and physicians from\u00a0<strong>COREMED<\/strong>the Medical University of Graz and the LMU Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t M\u00fcnchen) and the TERM W\u00fcrzburg (Chair of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Martin Funk\u00a0<\/strong>is the team leader and CEO of EVOMEDIS, which is based in the new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zwt-graz.at\/zwt-accelerator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ZWT ACCELERATOR<\/a><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(ZWT - Centre for Knowledge and Technology Transfer).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"The orphan drug designation is an important milestone for us and sends a strong signal to the outside world. We are delighted to have been involved in this great project right from the start.\"<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>An orphan drug designation<\/h2>\n<p>The advantages of an orphan drug designation are an accelerated authorisation procedure and market exclusivity in Europe for 10 years from authorisation, and in the USA for 7 years if the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also grants an orphan drug designation.\u00a0<strong>An orphan drug designation<\/strong>\u00a0thus supports the\u00a0<strong>development of drugs<\/strong>\u00a0for people suffering from rare, life-threatening diseases. Diseases that are often neglected by biomedical research and development due to their rarity are referred to as\u00a0<strong>orphan diseases<\/strong>, i.e. diseases that nobody cares about.
