IP-RACINE - Integrated Project - Research Area Cinema

Film or cinema is the driving force for the entertainment industry, giving the most compelling experience, and feeding the creation of other media. The movie chain is now going digital, from origination through distribution to display. IP-RACINE has extend the state of the art and enhanced European competitiveness by creating technologies to deliver enhanced cinematic entertainment that is transferable cross-platform.
The project?s research are among others:

  • Improved workflow techniques for integrating the digital process from scene to screen
  • Improved techniques for the intelligent use of very large cinematic data sets, automated versioning, annotation, indexing and retrieval
  • Tools for the real-time integration of ?real world? material with synthesised sounds and images in 2-D or 3-D form
  • A playout experience with better adaptability to technical, linguistic and cultural constraints

JOANNEUM RESEARCH has contributed to the project in the following areas:

Automatic Metadata Extraction
A service for performing automatic audiovisual content analysis on videos and still image sequences, which extracts shot boundaries, key frames, stripe images and camera motion. The extracted metadata is described using the MPEG-7 Detailed Audiovisual profile proposed by JOANNEUM RESEARCH. More about the profile and the cross-platform MPEG-7 library can be found here.

Video Browsing Tool
To support users in cinema post-production in dealing with large amounts of audiovisual material that is typically not annotated a video browsing tool has been developed. The tool enables the user to explore the content based on the automatically extracted features.

Metadata Validation and Mapping
Many different metadata formats are used througout the Digital Cinema production chain. Thus conversion between formats is inevitable. We have developed mapping and validation tools based on formalised semantics of the metadata formats. The results are used in the VAMP service for semantic validation of MPEG-7 documents.
