Im Zentrum der Projektidee steht der aus Lugano stammende Renaissance-Baumeister Domenico dell'Allio. Sein architektonisches Vermächtnis prägt bis heute italienische, kroatische, slowenische und steirische Städte.
In einem Pilotprojekt wurden alle Informationen über dell′ Allio, wie z.B. Karten/Pläne, Verträge und Aufzeichnungen, sowie die noch erhaltenen Befestigungsanlagen und Bauwerke digital dokumentiert und via Internet einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht. In Kooperation mit Partnerinstitutionen in Slowenien (Museen in Maribor und Ptuj) und Österreich (Stadtmuseen in Radkersburg, Fürstenfeld und Graz) entstand so eine wissenschaftlich/museale Vernetzung, die es kleinen und mittleren Museen auf einfache und kostengünstige Weise ermöglicht, ihre Objekte in Form einer Web-Präsentation im Internet zu veröffentlichen und so eine grenzüberschreitende touristische Attraktion zu schaffen.
A substantial number of small cultural institutions still have neither the possibility nor the experience, to use new technology and infrastructure developments. They often have small budgets regional relevance and insufficient employment structure. As a result, their existing software systems are often not compatible to technologies developed within international projects, initiatives and co-operations.
DOMINICO demonstrated the possibilities and the advantages of already existing and leading edge methods and technologies for especially small and medium sized cultural organizations (such as museums, exhibition designers, archives, artists...). This especially means that DOMINICO aimed to build a common exhibition database (for all partners accessible), which contained all relevant objects to a specific topic.
The specific focus within the project DOMINICO was on content related to the artistic work of the architect Dominico dell′Allio, who played a predominant role in designing a line of fortifactions (mainly in Austria and Slovenia) against Turkish invasion in Europe in the 16th century.
Additionally, the plan was to develop a supporting tool so that the content of the exhibition database can easily be transferred to exhibition or museum web sites, without any specific web know how and much effort.
