Experiments in live social and networked media experiences

EXPERIMEDIA ist ein Projekt aus der FIRE - Future Internet Research & Experimentation Initiative im 7. EU-Rahmenprogramm.

Experiments in live social and networked media experiences

EXPERIMEDIA is a project that is part of the FIRE - Future Internet Research & Experimentation initiative of the 7th EU Framework Programme. The aim of the FIRE initiative is to create a multidisciplinary research environment that encourages highly innovative and revolutionary ideas for new models of networking and service. Research driven by experiments is central to FIRE. Excellent visionary academic research is combined with economic considerations in order to raise Europe to the status of a global leading service provider by defining new concepts for the Internet of the Future.

The EXPERIMEDIA project aims to create an organization that is distributed over several locations. This will serve as a platform for experiments in the area of Future Media Internet. Experiments will be performed directly within the framework of the project. In addition, open calls for proposals will offer the possibility to use this platform to conduct innovative experiments. The complete involvement of end-users and resulting broadening in the accessibility and impact of events are focal points. The organization consists of four basic elements that are crucial for conducting the experiments: Smart Venues, Smart Events, Smart Communities and Media Production Cloud Services. Sustainability of the developed platform (even beyond the end of the project) is a particular concern of EXPERIMEDIA. Special attention, therefore, is paid to significant socio-economic effects and an effort is made to create a balance between short- and long-term interests.

From an Austrian perspective, it is an honor that Schladming has been selected as a testing site for this important project. Experiments with reference to alpine skiing events, among others, will be conducted. The 2013AlpineSkiing World Cup represents the pinnacle of achievement. Experiments will be conducted that are related to network media production and social networking, such as augmented reality browser for visitors, live streaming, etc. Specific experiments will be selected within the context of the project.  Through cooperation with 2030 Schladming GmbH, particular attention can be placed on regional sustainability. A positive result for JOANNEUM RESEARCH is that, through this project, research results with a high level of excellence can be communicated internationally and that innovations can be applied in regional industries through the consistent transfer of technology.
