iObserve

The aim of the project iObserve is to build a video surveillance system which is able to combine single low level detections in order to construct a more meaningful understanding of a situation on a semantic level aiming at the effective understanding of a potentially dangerous situation. Algorithms for the detection of objects, specifically pedestrians, vehicles and baggage items are the grounds on which iObserve will be based on. The semantic level of iObserve is capable of combining single detections resulting in more meaningful information structures in real-time.

iObserve NG - Distributed video surveillance in a highly scalable service-oriented architecture

With today's technology it is possible to build networks consisting of thousands of cameras. However, with conventional system architectures it is not possible to achieve the necessary scalability for large distributed intelligent monitoring networks. The paradigm of distributed systems has found its expression in the service-oriented architectures in recent years, especially in the Enterprise Computing with great popularity and wide distribution.

The goals of the project iObserve NG were to apply the principles of a service-oriented architecture on distributed, intelligent video surveillance to realize highly scalable, intelligent video surveillance systems. With the implementation of services for the semantic interpretation of video content and fully automatic calibration of cameras, the latest developments in video detection were integrated into the overall system. Aspects of scalability, integration, data security, availability, scalability and manageability have been considered in the system architecture.

Defined and open interfaces, both internally and externally, make sure that sensors of other modalities (e.g. audio or thermal imaging technology) can be integrated and interoperability with systems of other operators is possible.

The operational capability has been validated in a test setting. From the beginning, high value was placed on the practicality and usefulness for the end user.

The project was funded within the security research programme KIRAS by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT).
