Scalex - Scalable Exhibition Server

SCALEX is a tool for exhibition makers for the organization of the digital content of an exhibition into different dimensions, and for presenting this content to the visitor in a personalized way. The functionality and capacity of SCALEX is ahead of existing Internet exhibitions and exhibition software. SCALEX is not a content management system, a pure administration tool for exhibition objects, or a platform for producing digital multimedia content.

Ziele
SCALEX will contribute to the presentation and dissemination of the European cultural heritage. It reacts to the needs of European museums to present their collection with state-of-the-art technologies, to generate exhibitions for a wide range of different user profiles and this for affordable costs.

Inhalt
The SCALEX system consists of a knowledge editor, a storyliner and a player. The system is being developed in co-operation with museums and digital content providers, who will use the product for the presentation and publication of their assets. It will be tested and refined with model exhibitions in order to ensure that it suits the needs and expectations of exhibition designers.
Joanneum Research is involved in the specification of the system and is the main responsible technical partner for the implementation of the knowledge editor.
The knowledge editor is used to define and manipulate the network of metadata that constitutes the knowledge map underlying the exhibition. The knowledge editor works with a graphical interface and requires a minimum of textual input, and does not require special technical skills.

Ergebnis
With SCALEX museums can prepare and realise adaptive, knowledge-based exhibitions and exhibition components for use in situ and online. Using state-of-the-art Internet technology components, tailored for the specific requirements of museums and exhibitions, it will enable the exhibition to be published on the web.
