The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution. Among other services, the IET maintains a large database of scientific and technical literature and publishes books and technical articles. The IET is the second largest engineering society in the world next to the IEEE. The process for selecting the best paper begins with a review of all eligible publications. The editorial board or editorial team reviews and proposes nominations for each journal based on an assessment of a number of criteria that include the significance of the scientific contribution, the impact, performance, presentation of the work, and the number of citations and downloads. The winner is selected from these nominations by the editors-in-chief of each journal.

The awarded paper “Measurements and model for the satellite-to-aircraft channel in L-band” was published in the journal “IET Microwaves, Antennas & Propagation“ (Volume 13, Issue 13, 30 October 2019, p. 2207 – 2215). The authors Thomas Jost, Wei Wang, Martin Schwinzerl, Fernando Pérez-Fontán, Michael Schönhuber, Nicolas Floury and Svilen Dimitrov described in this contribution the airborne propagation experiments using Global Positioning System signals for channel sounding, the data evaluation and the derived channel model.
