Abstract:

In Europe, forest fires destroy an average of half a million hectares of forests each year. Fighting forest fires on ground and from the air is a highly challenging task. A large number of interacting factors need to be taken into account when coordinating forest fire fighting activities. Here we  describe a prototype of a forest fire fighting management system that we presented at a workshop in Tulln in October 2016, where international experts discussed its functionalities and suggested further improvements. We tested the system during a fire training exercise in Allentsteig in October 2017.
