Data Market Austria

Austria’s First Digital Ecosystem for Data, Businesses, and Innovation

Motivation and Challenges

The amount of data available and produced every day is exploding – data has become an important raw material that is of high importance in nearly every industry sector worldwide.

Therefore a vital data economy and a successfully working Data-Services Ecosystem in Austria is one of the factors to enable and ensure sustainable employment and growth and thereby societal stability and well-being.

The Data Market Austria Project is creating a Data-Services Ecosystem in Austria by advancing technology foundations for secure data markets and cloud interoperability, and creating an environment encouraging data-centred innovation.

Pilots will demonstrate the reuse of data and services and resulting value generated through innovative applications built on multiple open and proprietary data sources within the Earth Observation and Mobility application areas, with opportunities to extend to further application areas.

Example Earth Observation

The monitoring of forest areas offers a very efficient tool to obtain information of possible change caused by biotic or abiotic mechanisms. However, it is a-priori not known where changes or forest damage can occur. In order to overcome this drawback it is necessary to observe very large areas on a regular base. In this context the new SENTINEL satellite system offers a very powerful tool with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. As this system has a swath width of up to 290 km and a repetition rate of every 5 days the frequency for updates can fully satisfy forest monitoring needs. Storage capacities have to be adapted to the huge amount of data recorded for all systems, including Landsat TM.

Planned Results

By the end of the project, we expect to have a sustainable Data-Services Ecosystem in Austria, initially running on Austrian cloud infrastructure provided by multiple project partners, using the innovative foundational technology and business models developed during the project. The start-up and SME support during the project will lead to first demonstrations of commercial use of the Ecosystem.
