JOANNEUM RESEARCH

European Union research programmes

The framework programmes of the European Community for research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) are the most important instruments for research financing in the European Union. They serve to strengthen the scientific and technological foundations of industry in the European Community and t promote international competitiveness.

For JOANNEUM RESEARCH, these represent an important component of all its international activities. JOANNEUM RESEARCH has participated with great success in the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh EU Framework Programmes.  It has also participated in other concurrent and parallel research programmes such as Intelligent Energy – Europe (IEE) and European Territorial Cooperation (ETC). Currently, a total of 60 research projects have been approved. This is equivalent to a total project volume for JOANNEUM RESEARCH of 34 million EUR and, thus, an expected subsidy volume of 26 million EUR (as of September 2013.

JOANNEUM RESEARCH will soon be intensively involved in the follow-up programme Horizon 2020 (for the term 2014-2020).

In Horizon 2020 three EU programmes, namely the framework programme for research and technological development, the innovation sections of the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) will be combined for the first time. Research and innovation will be bundled to achieve an integrated approach in European research and innovation policy. This is specifically aime at improving the quality of life for the population.

The following three priorities are being pursued with a planned budget of over 70 billion EUR:

  • securing the European science and technology basis (scientific excellence)
  • creating direct economic incentives and improving future industrial competitiveness (market leadership) and
  • establishing prerequisites for a more intelligent, sustainable and closely integrated society (addressing major societal challenges).
