The Austrian Umbrella Organization for Geographic Information (AGEO) is the interdisciplinary association of all interested parties for geographical information (GI) in Austria. The AGEO AWARD aims to promote students by recognizing outstanding achievements in the field of spatial information science. The evaluation criteria for the award are relevance of the topic, practical relevance and theoretical basis, degree of innovation, economic relevance, structure and design of the work.

The master thesis "Mapping with Pleiades" by Dr. Roland Perko from the research group for Remote Sensing and Geoinformation at Institute DIGITAL describes all relevant principles for a satellite-based end-to-end -Workflow for 3D mapping. The thesis proposes methods to extract such 3D mapping products from multi-view stereo satellite images at the ground scan distance of the input data. Mapping products include digital surface models, digital terrain models, normalized digital surface models and ortho-rectified image mosaics, which are needed in many remote sensing applications.

The work was carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Computer Graphics and Vision at Graz University of Technology, supervised by Dr. Peter M. Roth (ICG TUG). Since satellite imagery is used in many economic and scientific areas such as agriculture, geological and hydrological research, forestry, environmental protection, spatial planning, education, intelligence services and for military purposes, this master's thesis has a high scientific relevance and potential for the development of modern digital remote sensing technologies.
