The research area "Medical Sensors" focusses on the application of various sensor technologies for measurements in a clinical setting. We develop new sensor-based measurement methods from an initial idea to a prototype that can be used in a clinical evaluation.

Sensors for online monitoring

We develop sensor systems suitable for continuous monitoring of key substances in various tissues. The miniaturization of sensors (down to a few micrometers) allows us to make in-vivo measurements, combine our sensor elements with different sampling techniques, and integrate them into microfluidic structures. The characteristics of accuracy of clinical measurement, minimal invasiveness, ease of use and user-friendly handling are equally important.

In vitro diagnostics

We develop sensors for in-vitro diagnostics, although near-patient testing is paramount. In this area, it is essential to take measurements rapidly and directly in samples in their native state. The measurement devices must be simple to operate and safe to use, because they are also used by non-professionals, for example in the home care industry.

Bioimpedance measurement

Many different tissue properties can be directly or indirectly measured using bioimpedance spectroscopy. As an example, the moisture content of the upper skin layers as well as the skin integrity can be easily assessed using this non-invasive method. In cell cultures, biological activity and motility of the cells can be ascertained in a label-free, real time and non-invasive way using impedance measurements.

Sensor evaluation

We help you develop your medical instrumentation system every step of the way, from designing the sensor, to exploring calibration methods, to analyzing the workflow. Through our close cooperation with the Medical University of Graz (MUG), we can evaluate sensor performance and system usability in a clinical setting using preclinical and clinical studies.

Clinical studies are conducted according to ICH-GCP-Standards at the local clinical research center at MUG.

Our preclinical studies are conducted in cooperation with the Institute of Biomedical Resarch at the MUG. Animal models: Pig/minipig, rat, mouse
