How climate-friendly is a Lithium-Ion Battery?

The institute LIFE has gained more than 25 years of experience in the environmental assessment of transport systems.

With the method of life cycle assessment (LCA):

  • we accompany the transformation of the transport and mobility sector towards the target of climate neutrality and
  • participate in research projects on propulsion and transport systems (including storage) for all classes of vehicles and on the production of renewable fuels.

As an example application, we have developed the Battery LifeCycle Check for batteries aimed at companies in the automotive sector as well as in the field of battery development, production and recycling.

With the Battery LifeCycle Check, we analyse the life cycle of transport systems and mobility offers.

With the Battery LifeCycle Check
  • we assess the environmental impacts based on an in-house developed battery LCA model to
  • compare battery-electric vehicles of all classes to vehicles with ICE or fuel cell and different renewable fuels (hydrogen, synthetic fuels, biofuels),
  • compare different battery chemistries based on different (critical) raw materials, cell production and different end-of-life scenarios for companies and research institutions.

 

The focus of our research

Currently, we are focusing our research on electric vehicles and batteries, fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen production, as well as synthetic fuels (e-fuels).

Another important contribution to the transformation of transport are non-technical measures. We are addressing these non-technical measures in an agent-based Traffic Model developed in-house. 

 

Workshop on the topic

JOANNEUM RESEARCH organized a stakeholder Workshop on 15 December 2022 within the project IEA HEV Task 40: Critical Raw Materials for Electric Vehicles, financed by the Austrian Klima und Energiefonds.
