"Distributed Energy and Power" Workshop
On April 29, 2014, the third workshop within the framework of a five-parted series funded by the Styrian Government on the topic of "Distributed Energy and Power" took place, hosted by the research network Green Tech Research Styria. Representatives of both science and industry discussed future R & D priorities and explored areas for possible joint projects on the premises of JOANNEUM RESEARCH.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Franz Strempfl (Stromnetz Steiermark GmbH), provided insights into the "challenges of distribution networks, reducing power requirements and delivering power at the desired location at the desired time" and JOANNEUM RESEARCH, RESOURCES group member Dr. Reinhard Padinger described "chances and challenges of a decentralized energy supply from renewable energy sources in Styria".
Workshop Intelligent Buildings
Intelligent, smart, savvy – these were adjectives that were used at the recent Research Network Green Tech Research Styria (GTRS) workshop held on February 12th, 2014, at the FH JOANNEUM. These terms described not for the research leaders, but the buildings. Project leader Dr. Johann Fank of RESOURCES stated, “Partners from science and industry discussed the potential building renovations and urban construction projects to improve buildings.” After keynote speeches were presented by Dr. Ewald Hasler (FH JOANNEUM, LQG – “Lebenszyklusorientierte Qualitätsoptimierung von Gebäuden”) and Dr. Mario Müller (FIBAG, ABC-Technology for Smart Cities), an intense discussion occurred. At the end of this discussion, issues that had been introduced and opportunities for joint projects for members GTRS, were outlined.
Call for Intelligent Buildings

Workshop „Materials / Resources / Recycling“
JOANNEUM RESEARCH, in close cooperation with the ECO WORLD STYRIA Environmental Engineering Cluster GmbH as part of the GTRS, organized a series of workshops within the framework of a project funded by Land Steiermark. The project is under the leadership of Dr. Johann Fank (Scientific Director of RESOURCES). The workshop series supported the thematic priorities defined by GTRS. The workshops strengthened exchange and cooperation between involved parties, and helped to initiate more joint R&D projects.
At the first workshop, held on October 30th, 2013, at the Technical University of Graz, representatives of the GTRS partners discussed aspects of the theme “materials / resources / recycling”. The workshop conclusions illustrated the scientific extent of the topic. These conclusions focused on their applicability in the economy and were discussed, with representatives from business and industry, at the 7th Cleantech Innovators Club meeting held on the April 1st, 2014.
