The aim is to further develop timber for new industrial applications and to forge closer links between research, technological development and commercial implementation. JOANNEUM RESEARCH holds a 10 per cent stake in Wood Vision Lab GmbH and contributes research expertise, particularly in the fields of digitalisation and robotics.<\/p>\n<p>Wood is one of the key materials for a resource-efficient industry. Its potential extends far beyond traditional applications in the construction sector. Lightweight yet robust timber and hybrid components can, for example, be used in the transport sector, mechanical engineering or other technical applications. To this end, the Wood Vision Lab is establishing a new research and development facility in Weiz, comprising offices, a technical centre and a research laboratory spread over more than 2,000 square metres.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cToday\u2019s ground-breaking ceremony lays the foundation for a pioneering centre \u2013 the only one of its kind in Austria \u2013 that brings together research, development and industrial implementation under one roof. Wood is one of the most important materials of the future. However, processing it presents the industry with different challenges to those posed by steel or plastics. This is precisely where the Wood Vision Lab comes in: together with our partners, we are developing new technologies and innovative timber and hybrid components to bring market-ready products into series production more quickly,\u201d says Heinz Mayer, CEO of JOANNEUM RESEARCH.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Procect RobOptiCut<\/h3>\n<p>The RobOptiCut project, which was launched in July 2026 and is supported by the Wood Vision Lab, demonstrates exactly how this combination of wood technology and digitalisation can work in practice. The focus is on an end-to-end process chain for the machining of veneers. Veneers are thin layers of wood that can be further processed into lightweight and durable components, amongst other things.<\/p>\n<p>The project centres on the development of an innovative process chain that combines state-of-the-art sensor technology, AI-supported image processing, intelligent optimisation algorithms and robotics. The aim is to produce high-quality, flawless veneers much more efficiently and to more than double the material yield. This will lay the foundations for resource-efficient and cost-effective hybrid timber components for demanding applications in lightweight construction. Reduced material waste, greater added value and an improved carbon footprint demonstrate the potential that lies in combining timber technology, digitalisation and robotics.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">ROBOTICS \u00fcbernimmt die roboter-basierte Automatisierung der am WoodVisionLab entwickelten Verfahren zur Furnierbearbeitung. Dies beinhaltet das robotergef\u00fchrte Abstapeln und Transportieren von einzelnen Furnieren und Furnierteilen, die Umsetzung der ausgew\u00e4hlten Schneide-, Klebstoffauftrags- und Fixierverfahren in roboterkompatible Bewegungsabl\u00e4ufe und die Sicherstellung der Prozessstabilit\u00e4t durch iterative Optimierung von Prozess-Parametern.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">DIGITAL is developing methods for identifying characteristics and fibres in hardwood veneers.
