OP-Check

JOANNEUM RESEARCH has developed the digital surgical checklist ‘OP-Check’ in collaboration with Steiermärkische Krankenanstaltengesellschaft (KAGes). KAGes operates 10 hospitals at nearly 20 locations with approximately 100 surgery rooms. With 18,500 employees, KAGes is the largest employer in Styria.
The aim of OP-Check is to digitise the WHO's paper-based surgical checklist, increase user acceptance and completion rates, and thereby improve patient safety.

Users are provided with relevant information in a structured manner throughout the entire perioperative process (pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative), as OP-Check is fully integrated into the hospital information system (HIS).

The design and development of OP-Check was carried out on an interdisciplinary basis together with users as part of a co-creation process. This included

  • Interdisciplinary focus groups and interviews
  • Process observations and workshops with doctors, nurses, and quality management and IT staff
  • Iterative development with functional prototypes and usability tests
  • Step-by-step development

Status

Following successful piloting at two selected locations, OP-Check has been rolled out for comprehensive use at KAGes since 2024 (approx. 100 operating theatres). OP-Check has also been available to other hospitals since 2024. KAGes – as our reference customer – has kindly agreed to demonstrate the operation of OP-Check to interested hospitals.
