Master's thesis on the topic "Assessing the Resilience of Supply Chains in the Renewable Energy Sector"

Context of the thesis
Current geopolitical changes could further accelerate the energy transition. However, many technologies and intermediate products (for PV, wind, storage) are imported into the EU. Current EU regulations increasingly call for building up European supply chains. It is important to identify critical dependencies and develop ways to reduce them.

Objective of the thesis
This master’s thesis aims to develop a methodological framework for systematically identifying and assessing supply chain dependencies for technologies and raw materials in the context of renewable energy. Methods such as network theory, input-output analysis, and LCA databases could be used for this purpose. Using detailed case studies (e.g., PV or critical raw materials), an evidence base will be created that captures concrete micro-level data.

Your responsibilities will be to write a master’s thesis with the following focus areas:

  • Data collection through literature review and/or interviews
  • Development of methods for capturing supply chain dependencies
  • Identification of critical dependencies
  • Development of your own case study applying the method

Your qualifications and competencies

Requirements:

  • Studies in economics, environmental systems sciences, or a field with strong quantitative modeling competence (including AI models), with corresponding academic progress
  • Strong personal interest in sustainability and sustainability assessment
  • Very good German (Level C1) and English skills, written and spoken
  • Ability to work in a team
