In this project, Open Flow Microperfusion (OFM) was used for the targeted delivery of an anticancer drug directly into the tumour tissue of animals. In horses with skin tumors, the drug tigilanol tiglate was continuously perfused into the tumour base via OFM probes. The treatment triggered the spatially well-defined tissue reactions characteristic of the drug, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of OFM as a platform for local tumour therapy.
In the project, HEALTH contributed the OFM technology and methodological expertise for the perfusion system, and was involved in method development and scientific evaluation.
