Abstract:
The digitalisation of the world of work is significantly changing production processes, professions and job profiles. It is leading to new business models and changing market structures. Routine activities in particular, which can be standardised, have a high potential for substitution by computer-controlled machines. In Carinthia, the proportion of employees in occupations focussing on routine activities remains constant, particularly in industry and among technical service providers. Digitalisation is leading to both job losses and the creation of new jobs and is changing the organisation of work and the provision of services. More efficient production processes reduce prices and increase demand for alternative goods, which has positive effects on employment. Regional labour market and economic policy should focus on promoting digitalisation skills and investing in digital infrastructure. Carinthia has strengths in industry and the ICT sector, but also weaknesses such as the company size structure. Five fields of action are identified: Investing in digital infrastructure, strengthening collaborations, qualifying the workforce, promoting women in technology and distribution policy to upgrade low incomes.
