Abstract:
Demographic trends have a significant impact on the labour supply. Regions with outward migration have a limited availability of qualified workers, while dynamic population trends can put pressure on the labour market. Demographic change is particularly noticeable when the working-age population declines. This study examines the effects of demographic change on the labour supply in Lower Austria's labour market districts. Despite a declining working-age population, the proportion of people in employment remains relatively constant. The labour force participation of women is increasing, while the proportion of people in non-working status is falling. The tertiarisation of education is increasing, with the proportion of employees with a tertiary education set to rise by 2040. Regional differences are clearly evident, with higher proportions of tertiary education in urban areas. The study emphasises the need to respond to demographic changes at an early stage in order to overcome the challenges for the labour market and regional prosperity.
