How healthy is our forest? Our experts from the Remote Sensing and Geoinformation research group are investigating this question in the FFG project AIDForHeRI. Using artificial intelligence and ecological modelling methods, we calculate the current and future risk of a forest stand for bark beetle infestation. We are supported by the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (meteorological data and climate scenarios) and the start-up BeetleForTech (validation and reference data collection).
The aim is to support forest owners and forest authorities in the rapid detection of damage and thus enable immediate processing of damaged wood. A risk forecast based on various climate scenarios should also help to identify forest stands with an increased risk of damage in the future in order to be able to take preventive measures in good time and thus make the forest "climate-fit". So that our forest can continue to fulfil its many functions as a commercial forest, recreation and habitat and CO2 reservoir in the future.
