Data Market Austria

The amount of data available today and the volume of data produced every day has reached unprecedented levels - data has become a raw material that plays a crucial role in almost every industrial sector worldwide. A flourishing data market and a functioning ecosystem for data services are therefore crucial for Austria in terms of employment and growth as well as sustainable social stability and prosperity.

The Data Market Austria project is establishing a data services ecosystem in Austria by creating a significantly improved technology basis for secure data markets and cloud interoperability as well as establishing a data innovation environment.

Pilot systems and innovative applications in areas such as earth observation and mobility will demonstrate the use of the new data service ecosystem and the added value it creates.

The monitoring of forest areas is a very efficient instrument for obtaining information on possible changes caused by biotic or abiotic mechanisms. However, it is not known a priori where changes or forest damage may occur. To overcome this disadvantage, very large areas need to be monitored regularly. In this context, the new SENTINEL satellite system offers a very powerful tool with high spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. New data is delivered at regular intervals of five days. The storage capacities must be adapted to the huge amount of data from all systems, including Landsat TM.

By the end of the project, we expect to have a sustainable data services ecosystem in Austria, which will initially be operated on Austrian cloud infrastructure provided by several project partners. The innovative basic technologies and business models developed in the project will be utilised. A particular focus is on supporting SMEs and start-ups during the project.
