Automated monitoring of wine diseases using 5G and AI

The project

Wine diseases such as Flavescence dorée, Stolbur and ESCA lead to significant yield losses and, in the worst case, to a threat to the entire wine field, with serious economic consequences for affected wine growers and wine growing regions. Existing monitoring solutions are labour-intensive and only allow very punctual detection. The VinoMon project therefore aims to research basic methods for the automated, wide-area detection of wine diseases, where detection per vine plant will allow early and localised control measures to be taken to minimise damage.

The interdisciplinary project team consists of experts in biology, technology (drones, multispectral imaging, GIS, plant AI) and innovative agricultural services.

Our activities in the project

JOANNEUM RESEARCH's tasks in the project include the development of a UAV-based recording platform with multispectral sensor technology, automated 3D flight path planning and optimised 5G communication, and researching and validating new plant-AI methods for detecting vine rows and specific vine diseases from multispectral images. We are also developing tools for map-based visualisation of relevant vine disease information.

Project details

In the industrial research project VinoMon, the base technologies for the following tasks are being researched and developed:

  • An automated drone with 5G communication and control
  • Automated procedures for flight and for multispectral imaging of the flanks of wine rows, using online data and image analysis services enabled by 5G
  • Robust, image-based deep neural networks for automated detection of relevant wine diseases and wine rows from multispectral images
  • Map-based visualisation of relevant wine disease information

VinoMon offers the following advantages to users of a future wine monitoring service (winegrowers, winegrowers’ associations, winegrowers' cooperatives, experts in chambers of agriculture, authorities):

  • Clear, locally concise visualisation of the spread of wine diseases for large areas with low manpower and time requirements to inform the control strategy
  • Early, local and targeted control measures to minimise damage
  • Avoidance of broad-spectrum pesticides through the early use of biological control measures in order to maintain or restore biodiversity in the wine field and its ecosystem
