Praktikant*innen bei der Arbeit
From working with a microscope to data analysis, machine learning and video shooting - you can do a holiday internship in a wide variety of areas at our research company. Corporate Communications spoke to some of the 38 young people about their work.
Holiday internship at JOANNEUM RESEARCH
"I work in the Weather and Climate Risk Management research group on the climate-smart food production project and support researchers, particularly in writing the final report. We are also conducting vegetable growing trials
in Wies, which involve determining the biodiversity of the plants' rhizosphere, i.e. the area in the soil immediately surrounding the root and influenced by it. This allows conclusions to be drawn about plant health, for example. It's cool to get an insight into the process of large research projects. I did an internship at JOANNEUM RESEARCH two years ago and I like working here, the working atmosphere is good and the colleagues are nice. After my studies, I would like to continue my research in the environmental field."
JOSEFA HARTL, 23, studying Chemistry and Molecular Biology, internship at LIFE
"In the Data Analysis and Statistical Modelling research group, I deal with literature and project research, carry out statistical evaluations, visualise and analyse data - for example from a laser scanner - and work with AI tools. The topics are varied; for example, I am working on a focal point survey on animal welfare management in abattoirs. Maths can be very abstract and the interesting thing about this internship is that I can see how maths is applied in practice. It's exciting to see what you can do with your studies. I like the fact that there are a lot of women here who are involved in maths."
THERESA LAKY, 20, studying maths and political science, internship at POLICIES
"I work in the Remote Sensing and Geoinformation research group on the EU Grassland Watch project. My job is to use satellite images to determine the nature of the surface for certain coordinates
to determine whether it is a meadow, a forest, a building or a sealed area, for example. There are 9 different categories in total. I'm looking forward to gaining practical experience in an area that fits in with my studies. I am interested in environmental and climate research and could imagine working at JOANNEUM RESEARCH after my studies. My plans for the future? Staying in research would be my favourite, but everything is still open."
HANNAH BRUNSTEINER, 23, studying Environmental Systems Science, internship at DIGITAL
"I work in the Smart Connected Lighting research group in Pinkafeld, picking and testing components. There are currently over 600 different components that are used here. I use a microscope to visually check whether they have suffered mechanical damage, for example. I log where they are stored in an Excel list and enter specifications. I'm also in the process of creating a web interface with this content. I'm interested in technology and this is my second internship at JOANNEUM RESEARCH."
SAMUEL SCHANTL, 17 years old, HTL Pinkafeld, internship at MATERIALS
"I'm working on a project in the field of medical sensor technology and I'm trying out different machine learning models. Specifically, it's about a shoe insole
for people who suffer from a diabetic foot. The aim is for a shoe insole equipped with sensors to recognise whether there is a foreign object in the shoe, as those affected cannot feel this themselves due to their condition. This is my second internship at JOANNEUM RESEARCH and this year I'm back in the same team as last year."
DAIANA-DENISA DEMARCSEK, 22 years old, studying Health Informatics/eHealth, internship at HEALTH
"I'm looking into the topic of the Planetary Health Diet: for the project partner Prandia - a canteen kitchen that supplies educational establishments in Graz with meals - I'm taking a closer look at the nature of the menus in terms of both health and environmental aspects. It's about the composition of the proteins, but also about calculating the CO2 footprint or water consumption. I was already very interested in nutrition when I was at school and my school served food from this kitchen. It's great that I can now get involved here and apply and deepen my knowledge. I first came into contact with JOANNEUM RESEARCH while I was still at school as part of my departmental work. I like the pleasant working atmosphere and the fact that I can work independently."
JOHANNA RIEDLER, 20, studying Nutritional Sciences, internship at LIFE
"My task in this holiday internship is to create videos for two projects in the Intelligent Acoustic Solutions research group. For example, they deal with the acoustic detection of cars that are too loud or acoustic fault detection in industrial plants. The topic of acoustics
I find very interesting. I don't yet know what I want to do as a career. I'm interested in music, sound, sound and media. At the beginning of the summer, I also worked at Radio Helsinki."
ALBERT LACKNER, 17, Ortweinschule, Film & MultimediaArt, internship at DIGITAL
"In my internship, I am working on machine learning in the field of digital health solutions: My task is to develop a machine learning pipeline for Named Entity Recognition. This involves extracting medical diagnoses automatically from texts - such as doctor's letters - so that doctors and medical staff do not always have to read the entire text. JOANNEUM RESEARCH is a well-known research institution, which is why I applied here to get a taste of everyday research. I am particularly interested in machine learning and bioinformatics."
VERA SCHIEFERMAIR, 24 years old, studying Biomedical Engineering, internship at HEALTH
"In my internship at the LIFE Institute, I am involved in researching and writing papers on the topics of active mobility, nature-based solutions and family benefits in Austria. I applied here to familiarise myself with research work. As I really enjoyed it last year as a holiday intern, I applied again this year. I am at the end of my Bachelor's degree and would definitely like to do a Master's degree. I don't have any concrete career plans yet, but I'm sure I'll work in the field of sustainability, preferably in the areas of mobility or energy, and I'd also like to continue working in research."
VANESSA WEISS, 23, studying environmental systems science, internship at LIFE
A total of 38 young people completed an internship at JOANNEUM RESEARCH, 21 of them at the DIGITAL Institute, 7 at MATERIALS, 3 at LIFE, 2 each at HEALTH, POLICIES and ROBOTICS and 1 in Infrastructure & Facility Services.
