The project

EvoLand is a Horizon Europe research project which develops new Copernicus land monitoring services that can be used EU-wide from 2026. The focus of Joanneum Research's work is on integrating novel Earth Observation, in-situ data and latest Machine Learning techniques for forest monitoring.

Specifically, large area monitoring of forest above ground woody biomass, forest canopy height, and continuous monitoring of forest damages. It is based on the processing of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and multispectral satellite image time series, as well as LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data from the international space station. The spatio-temporal consistent information on the status and dynamics of forests is an important basis for forest management and for applications in the fields of renewable energy, renaturation, biodiversity and climate change.
