At this year's TRB Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., AKUT was represented with a booth in the conference exhibition area. The 105th Annual Conference took place from January 11 to 15, 2026, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and the Marriott Marquis.

The AKUT® stand was created in collaboration with Inframatic LLC. Discussions with tunnel operators, planners, research organizations, and technology partners focused on how safety-critical incidents in tunnel operations can be detected earlier, assessed more quickly, and managed more effectively.

The TRB Annual Meeting is organized by the Transportation Research Board (TRB), which is part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Every year, the event brings together thousands of transportation experts from around the world and covers all modes of transportation in a wide-ranging technical program.

In addition to its presence at the expo, a poster entitled “Tunnel Safety in Real Time: The Measurable Advantage of Acoustic Event Detection” was presented in the session “Using Large Language Models for Critical Safety Event Analysis.”

The poster highlighted how acoustic event detection can contribute to tunnel safety—especially in scenarios where direct detection of an incident (e.g., through characteristic noise signatures) shortens response times and supports the rapid initiation of operational measures and emergency procedures. We were able to show that AKUT® can trigger an alarm in the control room very early on—about one second after the event.

TRB 2026 provided a valuable platform for bringing together operational requirements, current research approaches (including LLM-based safety analyses), and practical experience from real-world deployments. The numerous discussions and feedback from the community will be incorporated into the further development of AKUT® and future cooperation projects.
