How do innovations that have an impact beyond regional boundaries come about?
This question was the focus of the event “Digital Frontiers – Cross-Border Innovation Alliance”, held on 21 July in Udine. Representatives from business, research and politics in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Styria and Carinthia discussed how cross-border cooperation can strengthen the competitiveness of European companies. The highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between DITEDI, JOANNEUM RESEARCH and AT STYRIA.
Linking research to the needs of businesses
For JOANNEUM RESEARCH, the new alliance represents a further step towards linking research even more closely to the innovation needs of businesses. Together with its partners, the aim is to establish sustainable cooperation structures, accelerate technology transfer and develop new European projects. This will particularly benefit SMEs, which are set to gain easier access to research expertise, international partnerships and new markets.
JOANNEUM RESEARCH was represented by a high-level delegation. Helmut Wiedenhofer, Head of Strategic Partnerships and Networks, co-organised the panel discussion on establishing a cross-border innovation ecosystem for SMEs, together with Herbert Ritter (AT STYRIA) and Francesco Contin (DITEDI). Daniele Cozzi highlighted cooperation initiatives in the Alps-Adriatic region, whilst Silvia Russegger represented the DIGITAL Institute.
Digital Frontiers Gateway
Another key focus of the event was the ‘Digital Frontiers Gateway’ concept. It is designed to connect innovation ecosystems across national borders, promote collaboration between the public sector, research and industry, accelerate the digital transformation, and make it easier for SMEs to access international partnerships.
The Cross-Border Innovation Alliance thus creates a lasting network linking research, industry and public institutions. The aim is to pool the regions’ innovative strength and, together, provide fresh impetus for European competitiveness.
