Communication technology lab

We develop innovative software and hardware solutions for satellite radio.

Communication technology lab Credit: B. Bergmann

In our laboratory, we develop innovative solutions for radio communication, including satellite and terrestrial communication. We implement our signal processing algorithms using Software Defined Radio (SDR) and have the possibility to verify the developments on the target hardware with our self-developed fast simulation software. This enables the cost-effective development of demonstrators and prototypes, such as modems, signal analysers, monopulse tracking receivers and much more.

Our numerous experiments and studies in the field of electromagnetic wave propagation serve to optimise the use of radio transmission channels. Our measurements are always close to reality, test transmitters are carried by helicopters or aeroplanes, and relevant experiment locations are selected throughout Europe.

The laboratory equipment includes:

  • Spectrum Analyser and Signal Analyser up to 40GHz
  • Signal generator up to 50GHz, I/Q generators up to 6GHz
  • Oscilloscopes up to 3 GHz
  • Multimeters and power supplies
  • Wired EMC pre-compliance tester
  • Satellite modem for DVB-S2
  • Noise sources up to 40GHz
  • Software defined radio platforms with up to 2GSamples/s in TX and RX
  • Satellite ground stations in Q/V and W-Band with tracking functionality
  • Measuring antennas up to 6GHz
