The project lays the foundation for future environmentally friendly OPV technologies by using solution-based manufacturing processes, environmentally friendly materials and avoiding energy- and cost-intensive technologies.
The overarching goal was to produce flexible and efficient solar cell modules that are environmentally friendly and conserve resources. To achieve this goal, the project relied on several innovative approaches: Firstly, new polymers are being developed that enable the use of environmentally friendly solvents, in the best case water, instead of chlorinated solvents. Secondly, solar cell contacts are being replaced by electrodes applied in liquid form. And thirdly, resource-saving laser processes are being developed to connect the solar cells in order to enable efficient and fast production.
The project was characterised by a strong interdisciplinary character, contributing to the transition to more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources and making an important contribution to combating climate change through cooperation with the Institute for Chemical Technology of Materials at Graz University of Technology.
