The DurAIcell project, in collaboration with the MATERIALS and LIFE, an innovative multi-sensory monitoring system for battery modules of electric vehicles is being developed. Conventional sensors are combined with static and dynamic pressure and temperature sensors that are printed on flexible foils and integrated into the battery module. The novel sensor concept enables high-resolution analysis down to the level of individual battery cells. This allows the current state of charge and health of the battery to be determined very accurately and cell damage to be detected at an early stage. The improved battery state estimation also means that a larger proportion of the battery capacity can be used efficiently, resulting in smaller batteries with the same capacity. This in turn helps to make renewable energy systems and electric vehicles more efficient, lighter and cheaper, while reducing their environmental footprint.
In addition to leading the consortium, the research group for intelligent acoustic solutions in the DurAIcell project is taking on central tasks in the field of artificial intelligence and data analysis. It is developing advanced algorithms for signal processing and pattern recognition to efficiently evaluate the sensor data. Machine learning methods are used to analyse complex relationships between pressure, temperature and electrical measurements to enable high-resolution and reliable monitoring at the cell level and to make precise predictions about the charging and health status of the battery. In addition, the research group is working on the development of an AI-based early warning system that detects potential cell damage at an early stage, thus increasing the safety and lifespan of battery modules.
