The DIGITAL TWIN LAB of JOANNEUM RESEARCH offers innovative methods for creating ultra-high-precision reference maps (UHDmaps®) of real traffic routes as a service. To do this, seamless measurements of traffic routes are carried out from different perspectives using a measurement infrastructure that is unique in the international arena. The intelligent combination of highly accurate aerial measurements taken from drones and ground measurements taken from vehicles or even person-worn devices results in a previously unattainable quality of digital mapping of traffic routes in terms of completeness, correctness and accuracy.
Using in-house machine learning methods, the survey data is evaluated in a partially automated manner and converted into simulation-capable digital twins of the highest precision. The resulting 3D images of the traffic routes enable a previously unattainable level of quality in the simulation of automated vehicles. The realistic and reproducible simulation is an essential building block for the efficient development and safeguarding of automated vehicles and thus also an important contribution to the mobility transition. Cooperation partners and corporate customers are already successfully using UHDmaps® as a reference for test drives and for simulating automated vehicles in validation projects.
