Corrosion protection of additive manufactured AlSi10Mg0.3 using PMMA-siloxane silica sol-gel coating

Abstract:
This study presents an innovative hybrid PMMA-siloxane silica sol-gel coating as a corrosion barrier for additive manufactured (AM) AlSi10Mg0.3 in a 0.1 M NaCl solution. The surface was pretreated mechanically and then the coating was applied via a dip-coating process and thermally cured. Surface morphology and corrosion performance were characterized using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscope (SEM/EDS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results indicate significant enhancement in corrosion resistance, confirming the coating's potential as efficient barrier protection for AM aluminium alloys.
