Abstract:
In the frame of the Green Deal, several new policies were brought forward in order to transform the European Economy to more sustainability, all essentially based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). This study analyses current cases already employing space data for the monitoring of these policies’ impact. Use cases include the derivation of SDG indicators, better biodiversity assessments in the frame of the Biodiversity Strategy, the FloraFaunaHabitat (FFH) regulation and the new Nature Restoration Law (NRL). The fourth use case analyses the potential of space technologies for the enforcement of the European Union Deforestationfree Regulation (EUDR). Based on these examples, we identify prevailing limitations and existing obstacles and finally highlight potential future developments and new perspectives with specific emphasis on the opportunities generated by the large amounts of (space) data.
