Bachelor’s Thesis „Analysis and evaluation of zero-emission building technologies in the context of sustainable energy systems“

The Institute ROBOTICS is one of seven JOANNEUM RESEARCH institutes and develops application-oriented solutions for flexible, digitalized production. Research focuses include innovative technologies in industrial robotics, mobile manipulation, and robot safety, as well as the economic evaluation and system implementation of robotic applications.

Within the framework of the European research project REV-UP (IntegRated clean Energy harVesting modUlar enveloPe systems for Positive energy buildings), modular building envelope systems with integrated energy harvesting, intelligent control strategies, and digital decision-support tools for Zero-Emission Buildings (ZEB) are being developed and demonstrated in several European countries.

For the scientific investigation of a specific subtopic within this field, we are offering – in cooperation with an Austrian university -a Bachelor’s thesis on the systematic analysis and evaluation of innovative Zero-Emission Building technologies and their integration into future energy systems and sustainable business models.

As part of your Bachelor’s thesis, you will work on the following topics

  • Conducting a systematic literature review, inventory, and initial evaluation of technological solutions for Zero-Emission Buildings
  • Analyzing technologies for emission-free energy generation and use (e.g., BIPV, PV/T, heat pumps, energy storage systems, ventilation systems, building automation)
  • Classifying solutions according to different building types and climate zones
  • Assessing technical, economic, and organizational potential
  • Analyzing and co-developing business models in the field of energy communities
  • Structuring and preparing the results in a scientific format

Your qualifications

  • Ongoing Bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering, Energy Management, Building Services Engineering, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Ideally, basic understanding of IoT technologies (network technology, hardware interfaces)
  • Interest in sustainable energy systems and innovative building technologies
  • Good written and spoken English skills
  • Independent, structured, and goal-oriented working style
