What do you think about the climate crisis? An exciting discussion in a multi-ethical round

As part of the CLEANcultures project, around 40 participants from different religions and worldviews discussed the responsibilities of human beings in times of climate crisis.

On 14 March 2023, the institute LIFE, kindly supported by the City of Graz, invited to the Graz City Museum to discuss the question of human responsibility in times of climate crisis in an open round.

  • What actions are morally right considering human-made climate change?
  • Does every human being have a responsibility to protect the climate?
  • What position do we as humans occupy in nature?

These and other questions were reflected upon in the context of this multi-ethical polylogue.

The discussion was opened with inputs on perspectives from different religions by Michael Aldrian (Austrian Buddhist Religious Society), Khalilullah Azimi (Islam), Daniela Felber (Catholic Church Styria), Schlomo Hofmeister (Chief Rabbi Graz).

Moderated by Leopold Neuhold (Institute for Ethics and Social Studies at the University of Graz), a lively exchange took place with interested citizens of Graz. In addition to one’s personal responsibility and the responsibility for the community and the next generation, spiritual laws, the need of informed actions as well as consumerism as a form of worldview were discussed.

The participants agreed that climate and environmental protection must be seen as a mission of all religious denominations. Overall, it was perceived as very positive that different faiths came together for a consensus-oriented discussion and to take a joint positive approach to climate protection.

Second event in Admont

This event will also take place on 29 March 2023 in Admont. All interested citizens are welcome to take part in an open exchange of ideas.
