Abstract:
This chapter introduces two tools for multimedia annotation, namely the Semantic Video Annotation Tool (SVAT) and the K‐Space Annotation Tool (KAT). Though technically quite similar, these tools target different problems. On the one hand, SVAT is aimed at professional users in the audiovisual media production and archiving domain, and is therefore driven by a quite specific use case. The underlying model is the MPEG‐7 Detailed Audiovisual Profile and the whole tool is designed to handle videos in terms of manual and automatic annotation techniques. KAT, on the other hand, is supposed to be a framework for efficient and rich semantic annotation of multimedia content. The chapter discusses the current state of the art in multimedia annotation tools. It introduces SVAT and discusses its core functionality. The chapter focuses on semi‐automatic annotation and, in particular, discusses the implications of using a generic multimedia ontology like the Core Ontology for Multimedia (COMM).
