Abstract:
All communication systems have to deal with transmission errors; it’s just a matter of probability when the next error will occur. The system engineer has to develop its system so, that the Bit or Frame error-rate will not exceed a pre-defined limit. The complete transmission chain has multiple modules; starting from the encapsulation, access system, modulation, the radio channel and in reverse order the reception modules. All modules can have an influence on the error characteristic, like for instance an error multiplication but typically have their error source in the channel. In this paper we will take a detailed look into the characters of errors caused by the Q/V channel with a DVB-S2 signal and which measures can be taken to avoid or reduce them. We will identify the channel situations when certain errors will occur. The reasons can be manifold. From glitches, fluctuations, strong SNR slopes to random events, everything is possible. The team worked over several years on fade mitigation techniques for Q/V band operation with a DVB-S2 carrier [2], next to other experiments. In this paper we will take a close look on the channel characteristic and their influence on the error characteristics, like error duration and error distribution.
