Many rural communities are currently attempting to develop their eco-tourism potential. Tourism in these areas and particularly in national parks and nature reserves can be regarded as a very important but also very sensitive economic issue. It is believed that by using new geo-multimedia technologies for the presentation of tourist information about rural areas, sustainable development in these regions will be enhanced. Innovative strategies for the presentation of tourist information need to consider the spatial context of data and have to be optimised for important target groups. This article focuses on advanced visualisation techniques as a part of a whole conception of a geo-multimedia information system. The development of the conception as well as the creation of the prototype are presented in this article and were realised within the “ReGeo”-project, which is supported by the European Union’s 5th Framework Programme (Multimedia Geo-Information for e-Communities in Rural Areas with Eco-Tourism). One of the main objectives of the ReGeo-project is to store, manage and present geographically-oriented tourist information in regions with eco-tourism taking into account the spatial context of data. While nearly every tourist information is geographically-oriented information, the 2D- and 3D-visualisation plays a crucial role in the presentation of a region. In order to fulfil user expectations, such presentations have to be made in an interesting and appealing manner. Therefore, ReGeo-presentations include state-of-the-art visualisation techniques by which tourist information is presented in an appropriate way. The cooperating project partners and test sites of the ReGeo project belong to the following four European nations: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany and Poland.
