Skin ageing and Anti-Ageing

The skin is functionally the most versatile organ of the human body providing essential protecting and regulating mechanisms. The skin acts foremost as a barrier against negative environmental influences but it also regulates many aspects of physiology and immunology.

Skin ageing is a complex and multifactorial process continuously leading to a loss of structural integrity and physical functions of the skin. Although skin is a relatively resilient organ, skin function is strongly influenced by ageing. During intrinsic skin ageing, skin structure and skin barrier are getting weaker mostly determined by hormonal status and genetic factors. However, structural changes of the skin not only have visible effects such as wrinkles, but they also change essential skin functions followed by a higher risk of various skin diseases including skin tumors, traumatic damage and wound healing disorders.

COREMED has the goal to improve the understanding of fundamental processes in skin ageing and to specifically influence these processes. With this knowledge COREMED supports the development of new products and therapies.
