Additive Manufacturing: 3D printing, laser cladding

Materials and process development for Additive Manufacturing of high-quality metallic components is currently done at institute MATERIALS by using two complementary technologies:

  • In selective laser melting (SLM), also known as laser beam melting (LSS) or metal 3D printing, the volume to be generated is built up layer by layer from an existing powder bed by means of local fusion of the powder particles.
  • In additive laser cladding, also known as LMD (Laser Metal Deposition), an alloy in powder form is introduced directly into the laser beam via a feed line, causing it to fuse with the pre-existing metal structures.
