For the Paper „Energy from Biomass: Assessing Sustainability by Geoinformation Technology“ researchers Carina Sobe, BSc, MSc and Ass.-Prof.in, Mag.a Dr.in Manuela Hirschmugl from DIGITAL, together with co-authors from Italy, Germany and Spain, were awarded with the Best Paper Award.
The paper was presented at the 12. Symposium of Digital Earth held between 6th and 8th of July 2021 in hybrid format both in Salzburg and online. The paper shows the results of the BIOPLAT-EU project. The aim of the project is to promote the market uptake of the use of underutilized lands for bioenergy production in Europe. The paper consists of two parts: first, the process and results of the remote sensing based pan-European assessment of underutilized lands using remote sensing data from Europe’s Earth Observation programme COPERNICUS and NASA’s Landsat programme. Secondly, it describes the the use of geodata for assessing sustainability for bioenergy value chains using the developed WebGIS Tools.
