Integrated energy solutions and new market mechanisms for an eXtended FLEXibility of the European grid

Period: 01/10/2019 – 30/09/2023

The project X-FLEX will design, develop and demonstrate a set of tools to integrate the emerging decentralized ecosystem of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and flexibility systems into the existing European energy system in an efficient and cost-effective manner. The goal is to create a more stable, secure and sustainable smart grid with special attention to extreme weather conditions.

Within X-FLEX 4 tools are developed:

• SERVIFLEX
• GRIDFLEX
• MARKETFLEX and the
• X-FLEX platform

The SERVIFLEX tool establishes a holistic framework for flexibility extraction, profiling, forecasting, classification, clustering and management to serve different market and grid needs. The GRIDFLEX tool aims at grid and microgrid operators and offers support in using flexibility to prevent congestion (voltage and current issues) and power quality problems. MARKETFLEX enables final consumers and prosumers to access and participate, individually or through an intermediate party on different energy markets such as wholesale market, local energy market or ancillary services market for TSO or DSO. The X-FLEX platform integrates all the X-FLEX solutions. The project solutions will be demonstrated in four pilot sites in three EU Member states (Slovenia, Bulgaria, Greece) focusing on different types of networks and complementary stakeholders demonstrating at the same time a bigger impact and replicability potential of the project in every type of energy grid.

The role of JR

The Research Group International Climate Politics and Economics of JOANNEUM RESEARCH is responsible for environmental and social impact assessment as well as business model development and regulation. JOANNEUM RESEARCH is the Business and Innovation Manager (BIM) of the Project.
